Concrete Lab Technician Apprenticeship Course Syllabus
Course Title
Concrete Lab Technician Apprenticeship Course
Course Code
CLT101
Description
This course, under the Apprenticeship Training Scheme (ATS), provides comprehensive training for concrete lab technicians, focusing on testing, analyzing, and ensuring the quality of concrete for construction projects. Apprentices will gain hands-on experience in conducting standard tests, handling laboratory equipment, and preparing quality reports, preparing them for roles in construction, civil engineering, and quality control laboratories. The course aligns with the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) and complies with the Apprentices Act, 1961.
Objectives
- Conduct standard tests on concrete to assess strength, durability, and workability.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment for concrete testing safely and accurately.
- Analyze test results and prepare quality control reports for construction projects.
- Ensure compliance with Indian Standards (IS codes) and safety protocols in laboratory operations.
Schedule
The course spans 8 weeks, combining basic training and on-the-job practical training as per ATS guidelines. Each week focuses on specific skills essential for concrete lab technicians. Below is the detailed breakdown:
Week 1: Introduction to Concrete Technology
Overview of concrete properties, role of lab technicians, safety protocols, and introduction to laboratory equipment under ATS.
Week 2: Concrete Mix Design and Sampling
Understanding concrete mix proportions, sampling fresh concrete, and preparing test specimens.
Week 3: Workability Testing
Conducting slump tests, compaction factor tests, and flow tests to assess concrete workability.
Week 4: Compressive Strength Testing
Performing compressive strength tests on concrete cubes and cylinders using compression testing machines.
Week 5: Durability and Special Tests
Testing for concrete durability, including water absorption, permeability, and non-destructive testing (e.g., rebound hammer).
Week 6: Laboratory Equipment Maintenance
Calibrating, cleaning, and maintaining testing equipment to ensure accurate results.
Week 7: Quality Control and Reporting
Analyzing test data, preparing quality control reports, and ensuring compliance with IS codes (e.g., IS 456, IS 516).
Week 8: Final Project and Assessment
Completion of a comprehensive concrete testing project and preparation for the All India Trade Test (AITT) under NCVT.
Assessment Methods
Apprentice performance is evaluated through a combination of practical, theoretical, and participatory components, preparing them for the National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC):
- Weekly Assignments: 40%
- Midterm Project: 20%
- Final Project: 30%
- Participation and Attendance: 10%

Additional Notes
Apprentices must be at least 14 years old and meet the minimum educational qualification (typically 10th grade passed or equivalent, preferably with a science background, as per trade requirements). The course includes basic training (20-25% of the program) and on-the-job training, with a stipend provided as per NAPS guidelines (e.g., Rs. 7700 per month for one-year ITI trade passed apprentices, as per Gazette notification dated 25th September 2019). Successful completion leads to the National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) upon passing the All India Trade Test (AITT), recognized for employment in government and private sectors. The training emphasizes practical skills in concrete testing and adherence to Indian Standards, critical for ensuring the quality and safety of construction projects.
