Draftsman (Electrical) Apprenticeship Course Syllabus
Course Title
Draftsman (Electrical) Apprenticeship Course
Course Code
DE101
Description
This course, under the Apprenticeship Training Scheme (ATS), provides comprehensive training for electrical draftsmen, focusing on creating detailed electrical drawings, schematics, and layouts for construction, industrial, and residential projects. Apprentices will gain hands-on experience in using CAD software, interpreting electrical specifications, and ensuring compliance with standards, preparing them for roles in construction, engineering, and manufacturing sectors. The course aligns with the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) and complies with the Apprentices Act, 1961.
Objectives
- Develop accurate electrical drawings and schematics using CAD software like AutoCAD.
- Interpret electrical blueprints, specifications, and technical requirements for projects.
- Ensure compliance with Indian Electrical Rules, IS codes, and industry standards in drawings.
- Collaborate with engineers to create layouts for wiring, lighting, and power systems.
Schedule
The course spans 8 weeks, combining basic training and on-the-job practical training as per ATS guidelines. Each week focuses on specific skills essential for electrical draftsmen. Below is the detailed breakdown:
Week 1: Introduction to Electrical Drafting
Overview of electrical draftsman roles, workplace safety, electrical fundamentals, and introduction to drafting tools under ATS.
Week 2: CAD Software Basics
Learning AutoCAD for electrical drafting, including creating basic drawings, symbols, and annotations.
Week 3: Electrical Symbols and Schematics
Understanding and drawing electrical symbols, single-line diagrams, and schematic layouts.
Week 4: Wiring and Circuit Layouts
Creating wiring diagrams and circuit layouts for residential and commercial buildings.
Week 5: Power and Lighting Systems
Designing layouts for power distribution, lighting systems, and emergency systems like fire alarms.
Week 6: Blueprint Interpretation
Reading and interpreting electrical blueprints, specifications, and coordinating with project requirements.
Week 7: Standards and Compliance
Ensuring drawings comply with Indian Standards (e.g., IS 732, IS 4648) and quality control processes.
Week 8: Final Project and Assessment
Completion of a comprehensive electrical drafting project and preparation for the All India Trade Test (AITT) under NCVT.
Assessment Methods
Apprentice performance is evaluated through a combination of practical, theoretical, and participatory components, preparing them for the National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC):
- Weekly Assignments: 40%
- Midterm Project: 20%
- Final Project: 30%
- Participation and Attendance: 10%

Additional Notes
Apprentices must be at least 14 years old and meet the minimum educational qualification (typically 10th grade passed or equivalent, preferably with a science or technical background, as per trade requirements). The course includes basic training (20-25% of the program) and on-the-job training, with a stipend provided as per NAPS guidelines (e.g., Rs. 7700 per month for one-year ITI trade passed apprentices, as per Gazette notification dated 25th September 2019). Successful completion leads to the National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) upon passing the All India Trade Test (AITT), recognized for employment in government and private sectors. The training emphasizes proficiency in CAD software and compliance with electrical standards, addressing the demand for skilled electrical draftsmen in India’s construction and engineering industries.
