Course Title

Automotive Body Painter Apprenticeship Course

Course Code

FMOABP101

Description

This course, under the Flexible Memorandum of Understanding (Flexi-MoU) Scheme within the Apprenticeship Training Scheme (ATS), provides comprehensive training for automotive body painters. It focuses on preparing, painting, and finishing vehicle surfaces, including cars and light commercial vehicles, to meet industry and customer standards. Apprentices will gain hands-on experience in surface preparation, color matching, spray painting, and quality control using modern tools and spray booths, preparing them for roles in automotive repair shops, dealerships, and refinishing centers. The course aligns with the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) and complies with the Apprentices Act, 1961.

Objectives

  • Prepare vehicle surfaces through cleaning, sanding, and priming for paint application.
  • Mix and match paint colors to achieve precise finishes, using modern paint systems.
  • Apply undercoats and topcoats using spray guns, ensuring defect-free finishes.
  • Adhere to safety, environmental, and BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) regulations in automotive painting.

Duration

6 months (2 weeks basic training, 5 months on-the-job training)

Schedule

The course spans 6 months, combining basic training and on-the-job practical training as per Flexi-MoU guidelines. Each phase focuses on specific skills essential for automotive body painters. Below is the detailed breakdown:

Weeks 1-2: Basic Training

Introduction to automotive painting, workplace safety, and trade practices. Overview of paint materials, spray booth operations, and environmental regulations.

Month 1: Surface Preparation

Learning surface cleaning, sanding, masking, and applying corrosion protection. Training on substrates like steel, aluminum, and composites.

Month 2: Paint Mixing and Color Matching

Understanding paint chemistry, mixing systems, and color matching techniques. Using tinting and blending to achieve exact color specifications.

Month 3: Undercoat Application

Applying primers and undercoats using spray guns, ensuring adhesion and surface smoothness. Training on defect identification and correction.

Month 4: Topcoat Application

Applying topcoats (solid, metallic, pearlescent) with spray guns, mastering techniques for even coverage and high-gloss finishes.

Month 5: Finishing and Quality Control

Polishing, buffing, and inspecting painted surfaces for defects. Conducting quality checks using light tunnels and gloss meters.

Month 6: Final Project and Assessment

Completion of a comprehensive painting project (e.g., refinishing a vehicle panel) and preparation for joint ITP-DGT assessment.

Assessment Methods

Apprentice performance is evaluated through a combination of practical, theoretical, and participatory components, preparing them for the Certificate of Proficiency:

  • Practical Assessments: 50% (surface preparation, paint application)
  • Project Work: 30% (complete vehicle panel refinishing)
  • Theoretical Tests: 15% (paint chemistry, safety standards)
  • Attendance and Participation: 5%

Additional Notes

Apprentices must be at least 18 years old (due to hazardous materials) and meet the minimum educational qualification (typically 10th grade passed or equivalent, preferably with a technical background, as per ITP requirements). The course includes 20-25% basic training and 75-80% on-the-job training, with a stipend as per NAPS guidelines (e.g., Rs. 7700 per month for one-year ITI trade passed apprentices, as per Gazette notification dated 25th September 2019). The government reimburses 25% of the stipend (up to Rs. 1500/month) to the ITP. Successful completion leads to a Certificate of Proficiency, recognized for employment in automotive repair and refinishing sectors. The training emphasizes precision, safety, and compliance with environmental regulations, addressing the demand for skilled automotive body painters in India’s growing automotive repair industry, driven by increasing vehicle ownership and collision repair needs.
