Clinical Medical Laboratory Technician (Pathology) Apprenticeship Course Syllabus
Course Title
Clinical Medical Laboratory Technician (Pathology) Apprenticeship Course
Course Code
MLT101
Description
This course, under the Apprenticeship Training Scheme (ATS), provides comprehensive training for clinical medical laboratory technicians specializing in pathology, covering sample collection, pathological testing, equipment handling, and quality control. Apprentices will gain hands-on experience in conducting diagnostic tests, maintaining laboratory standards, and ensuring accurate reporting, preparing them for roles in pathology labs, hospitals, and diagnostic centers. The course aligns with the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) and complies with the Apprentices Act, 1961.
Objectives
- Collect, process, and analyze biological samples for pathological testing accurately.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, such as microscopes and analyzers, safely.
- Interpret test results and prepare accurate diagnostic reports under supervision.
- Adhere to safety protocols, quality control standards, and regulatory guidelines in clinical labs.
Schedule
The course spans 8 weeks, combining basic training and on-the-job practical training as per ATS guidelines. Each week focuses on specific skills essential for clinical laboratory technicians in pathology. Below is the detailed breakdown:
Week 1: Introduction to Clinical Pathology
Overview of clinical laboratory operations, role of pathology technicians, safety protocols, and biohazard management under ATS.
Week 2: Sample Collection and Preparation
Techniques for collecting blood, urine, and other specimens, labeling, and preparing samples for testing.
Week 3: Hematology and Blood Analysis
Performing complete blood counts (CBC), blood grouping, and analyzing blood smears using microscopes.
Week 4: Clinical Biochemistry
Conducting tests for glucose, lipid profiles, and liver function using automated analyzers.
Week 5: Microbiology and Parasitology
Identifying pathogens, preparing cultures, and conducting microscopic examination of samples.
Week 6: Laboratory Equipment Maintenance
Calibrating, cleaning, and troubleshooting laboratory equipment to ensure accurate results.
Week 7: Quality Control and Reporting
Implementing quality control measures, validating test results, and preparing diagnostic reports.
Week 8: Final Project and Assessment
Completion of a comprehensive pathology testing project and preparation for the All India Trade Test (AITT) under NCVT.
Assessment Methods
Apprentice performance is evaluated through a combination of practical, theoretical, and participatory components, preparing them for the National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC):
- Weekly Assignments: 40%
- Midterm Project: 20%
- Final Project: 30%
- Participation and Attendance: 10%

Additional Notes
Apprentices must be at least 14 years old and meet the minimum educational qualification (typically 12th grade passed with science subjects or equivalent, as per trade requirements). The course includes basic training (20-25% of the program) and on-the-job training, with a stipend provided as per NAPS guidelines (e.g., Rs. 7700 per month for one-year ITI trade passed apprentices, as per Gazette notification dated 25th September 2019). Successful completion leads to the National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) upon passing the All India Trade Test (AITT), recognized for employment in government and private sectors. The training emphasizes practical skills in sample analysis, equipment handling, and adherence to laboratory standards, critical for pathology diagnostics in clinical settings.
