Boiler Maker Apprenticeship Course Syllabus
Course Title
Boiler Maker Apprenticeship Course
Course Code
BMK101
Description
This course, under the Apprenticeship Training Scheme (ATS), provides comprehensive training in boiler making, covering fabrication, assembly, and maintenance of boilers, pressure vessels, and related structures. Apprentices will gain hands-on experience in welding, blueprint reading, and using fabrication tools, preparing them for roles in manufacturing, power plants, and construction industries. The course aligns with the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) and complies with the Apprentices Act, 1961.
Objectives
- Fabricate and assemble boiler components and pressure vessels using welding and cutting techniques.
- Read and interpret technical blueprints and specifications accurately.
- Use hand and power tools safely for cutting, shaping, and assembling metal structures.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards and quality control in boiler fabrication and maintenance.
Schedule
The course spans 8 weeks, combining basic training and on-the-job practical training as per ATS guidelines. Each week focuses on specific skills essential for boiler makers. Below is the detailed breakdown:
Week 1: Introduction to Boiler Making
Overview of boiler making, safety protocols, and introduction to tools, materials, and workshop practices.
Week 2: Blueprint Reading and Measurements
Understanding technical drawings, specifications, and using precision measuring tools like calipers and gauges.
Week 3: Welding Techniques
Learning shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and gas metal arc welding (GMAW) for boiler fabrication.
Week 4: Cutting and Shaping
Using oxy-fuel cutting, plasma cutting, and shearing tools to prepare metal components.
Week 5: Assembly and Fabrication
Assembling boiler components, including tubes, plates, and fittings, using riveting and bolting techniques.
Week 6: Pressure Vessel Construction
Fabricating and assembling pressure vessels, focusing on structural integrity and leak prevention.
Week 7: Maintenance and Quality Control
Inspecting and maintaining boilers, identifying defects, and ensuring compliance with industry standards.
Week 8: Final Project and Assessment
Completion of a comprehensive boiler fabrication project and preparation for the All India Trade Test (AITT) under NCVT.
Assessment Methods
Apprentice performance is evaluated through a combination of practical, theoretical, and participatory components, preparing them for the National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC):
- Weekly Assignments: 40%
- Midterm Project: 20%
- Final Project: 30%
- Participation and Attendance: 10%

Additional Notes
Apprentices must be at least 14 years old and meet the minimum educational qualification (typically 10th grade passed or equivalent, as per trade requirements). The course includes basic training (20-25% of the program) and on-the-job training, with a stipend provided as per NAPS guidelines (e.g., Rs. 7700 per month for one-year ITI trade passed apprentices, as per Gazette notification dated 25th September 2019). Successful completion leads to the National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) upon passing the All India Trade Test (AITT), recognized for employment in government and private sectors. The training emphasizes practical skills in welding, cutting, and assembly, critical for boiler making in industries like power plants and manufacturing.
